Pulling The Cork on wine and interesting people from all walks of life.
Pulling The Cork was born in the Spring of 2008 while I was attending the Electronic Recruiting Exchange Expo in San Diego. My name is Michael Homula and I am a long term veteran of the recruiting industry who developed a passion for wine at the age of 24. More on that story later!
While at this conference I had the opportunity to sit down with some fellow recruiting and business colleagues (Jason Davis, Ben Yoskovitz, Joel Cheesman, Maren Hogan and others I can't remember right now), all relative neophytes to wine, and share two bottles of the 2000 Alban Vineyards Syrah Seymour's Vineyard. It was an awesome and big wine to share with people who have really never experienced a wine of such quality, refinement and elegance. They were in awe and really appreciated the experience. I loved it. Nothing gets me more excited than sharing great wine with people. It is even more exciting to me when I get to share great wine, no matter the price or pedigree, with people who might be experiencing wonderful wine for the first time.
During the course of the few hours we were together talking about this wine, business, politics, social issues, social media, recruiting, sports - you name it we talked about it - I came to realize how wine can be a centerpiece of great conversation. I actually said to the group that pulling the cork on a bottle of wine with friends is ultimately pulling the cork on great conversation, great relationships, great memories and great experiences. Pull the cork, let the wine or conversation have some air and an opportunity to strut its stuff and often magic can happen.
Pulling The Cork was born that night in San Diego.
The goal of Pulling The Cork is to engage in straight forward, easy to understand and fun talk about all things wine while featuring engaging conversations with leaders and interesting people in all walks of life using wine as a conversation starter.
There will be tasting notes, video tasting notes, other videos, discussions about wine basics and education, wine news etc. All the normal fare for a wine blog. But we will also have interesting and fun conversation with interesting people. Hopefully some of those people will be in the wine trade or business, winemakers, vineyard managers, wine writers or others associated to wine in some way or another. In some cases they will be interesting people from all walks of life who have nothing to do with wine except share a passion for it. In still other situations the people we talk to might have very little wine experience at all.
All will be people with ideas to share who just need the cork pulled to unleash their passions, their dreams and their brilliance. I have come to learn that all people possess each of those things, sometimes it just needs to be uncorked. No matter what differences exist between people, Pulling The Cork on a bottle of wine announces the end of all that nonsense and signals the beginning of a shared experience, great conversation and good times. Pulling The Cork on a bottle of wine opens up endless opportunities, amazing experiences and a journey that often has no destination but pure enjoyment of the ride. We just want to spread love, happiness and great conversation through every bottle of wine we share.
