Today we are going to have a go at one of the most up and coming, in terms of popularity, varietals in America. Chardonnay is still king amongst white wines in the United States but Pinot Grigio is quickly ascending in popularity.
Today's wine is the 2006 Marco Felluga Pinot Grigio Mongris from the DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata) Collio, a hilly area in the Northeastern part of Gorizia in Italy. That whole DOC thing is Italy's version of appellation which is a quality assurance label modeled after the French AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée).
PTC is going to do a series of posts in the near future on varietals but before we move on we need to address the confusion many have about Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris. Pinot Gris, as it is referred to everywhere but Italy, is a mutant clone of Pinot Noir. Pinot Grigio is a clone of Pinot Gris. Basically you have a sort of mutant cloning thing going on that all sounds a bit incestuous and ominous but it isn't. This is all perfectly normal in the world of wine and grape varietals. Technically speaking, Pinot Grigio only comes from Italy and the rest of the world makes Pinot Gris. That is as much about the varietal as I am going to say right now because we don't want to spend that much time on it here considering we are going to talk varietals in detail at a later date.
Alright, enough of that mess. Let's get to the wine!
I hope you like the video above but here is the tasting note I wrote, which I always document first at Cellartracker:
- 2006 Marco Felluga Collio Pinot Grigio Mongris - Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
This is an interesting Pinot Grigio offering from Marco Felluga. The color was the straw like yellow you would expect from an Italian Pinot Grigio but rather more lemony yellow like an Alsatian Pinot Gris. Hmmm, strange! The nose was a bit muted but offered citrus, florals (acacia maybe?) and apple. The palate as also rather restrained with grapefruit, apple, melon and some lemony pucker. It was crisp and acidic to the extreme and it was rather light bodied with a short stacatto finish that was a little tight and medicinal to me. It is refreshing right up to that finish. Overall it isn't terrible - a GOOD but not a very good wine. 50+3+10+14=81 pts.
