My name is Rob MacKay. I’m a 38 year old professional software engineer by trade and I have been a serious wine enthusiast for the past 6 years. I’m known on CellarTracker as RoundersRob and Twitter, logically, as @RoundersRob, a nickname given to me many years ago when I was a semi-pro poker player. The difference between the pro and semi-pro poker player is quite simple. The pro is willing to quit his ‘real’ job.
The seeds of wine obsession were first sewn many many years ago when I attended a three month bartending course which had very little focus on wine other then a quick mention here and there. I guess bartenders need to know a little more about party drinks and cocktails then they do about wine.
When I met my wife in 2004, we both shared an interest in wine and I decided to educate myself by reading several wine books including Karen MacNiel’s The Wine Bible cover to cover, all 904 pages of it. While that provides a good basis of knowledge, it’s nothing compared to trying different wines from all over the world.
I love many different kinds of wine but my personal preference leans toward France and Italy. I currently live near Santa Cruz, California, on the doorstep of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.
